Review: #550 Chase Michaels vs. Max Ryder (UCW)

In the comments for my Austin Tyler vs. Erik the Viking review (here), I received two recommendations for other matches. Chase Michaels vs. Max Ryder was the second one. It's another UCW video in the classic style with a couple of twists - one at the start and the other at the end - that were inspired by a reader of this this blog.

Chase and Max go for it.

Both these guys have grown a lot since they debuted. Max Ryder started as a sweet and eager but soft and inexperienced jobber. Now, he's in better shape and is much more experienced. Max is still a jobber, but now he's a feisty one who can hang with ex-champs. Max isn't that talkative, but he's one heck of a screamer.

Meanwhile, Chase Michaels has transitioned from young cutie to sinister stud. I'm not sure if it's part of an intentional storyline, but it seems like ever since a seemingly innocent rookie Chase played with Nero in his first video (reviewed here), he's consistently come back harder and nastier. Whatever unleashed his inner heel, the former UCW champ has embraced the role with gusto.

Chase gets nastier and sexier every match.

Max is slim and sweaty.

Two studs putting on a show.

Things kick off immediately with Chase throwing Max onto the mat. The nasty heel works over the helpless hunk with glee, breaking him down. This is back-and-forth, but it feels more squashy than a typical UCW match. Maybe because we start with Chase on top and there's 10 minutes of one-sided abuse to end this 30-minute video. Or maybe because Chase is such a confident heel now. I never think Max will win, even when he's on top.

Chase knows how to treat a jobber.

Max isn't going down without a fight any more.

Max loves getting grabby, so this
"Ball Bust" match is perfect for him.

The 20 minutes of wrestling is UCW's usual hard-hitting mat work. Lots of low blows, body work and submission moves. Chase is cocky and brutal. Max is really vocal in his suffering. I prefer the Chase domination moments as I think it plays into both their strengths. The extracurricular activity is pure vicious abuse with the loser strapped to the wall then tortured in multiple ways with a bowling pin.

Chase has fun tormenting Max.

Max works a crossface, showing his growth.

Chase checks out his new toy.

In the end, this was a good scrap between two of UCW's hottest and most interesting studs. Chase's evolution continues and he's the nastiest I've seen him. Max is a screamer, suffering loudly and often, but also dishing out the nasty, too. It's all classic UCW action with a little extra victory punishment at the end.

What are other bloggers saying?

So that's my take. What's yours?

  1. glad to see that u r reviewing ucw matches. i enjoy they quiet a bit. chase and max are both evolving and it's hot to see them in each match. both were jobbers and now on their way to headlining. although chase seems to be there already. he's mat presence is amazing. i like his s/m bondage approach- esp his rope skills and dungeon master appeal. the facial hair is a turn on as well as his ripped body and confident swagger.

i'm interested in seeing max continue to evolve. he's growing bigger and stronger and his confidence seems to be increasing.

i'd like to see him take control of a match and loose the screaming jobber routine. maybe a match between him and axel. max has certainly surpassed him in bulk but not yet in skill or confidence.

looking forward to more from camp ucw. come on max, u can do it.

    1. Thanks! Good to get a comment from a UCW fan. They're my lowest viewed reviews, but I enjoy them a lot (they've won my fave promotion Cavey twice).

I agree that Max has the physical presence to be dominant, but he doesn't seem to have the desire.
