Review: Austin Tyler vs. Nick Flex #2 (Muscleboy Wrestling)

Full disclosure: This video was provided to me by Muscleboy Wrestling.

In 2018, I declared Austin Tyler vs. Nick Flex as the best MBW match of the year, the best Nick Flex match ever, and Austin Tyler's best gear ever. All still true. It was set in the small mat room, the action was fierce, the video was crisp and the wrestlers were sweaty and pumped. The match eventually won a Cavey and helped Austin secure the Favorite Wrestler Cavey for 2018.

Now, we have the rematch with the men hitting the ring. How does it go?

The MBW superstars take it to the ring this time.

Austin's retirement from the gay wrestling video scene hasn't really slowed down the rate of releases that much. He's had post-departure releases at MBW and UCW. And nothing ever really goes away. The one benefit of delayed releases is that guys never change. Austin's in prime shape here with his thick, powerful legs, heaving pecs, flawless skin and strong arms. Such a yummy body.

As a nice contrast, Nick's more of an upper body guy, with those broad shoulders, python arms, massive chest, and narrow waist. The muscle hunk is a powerful beast in the ring and I think I've only seen him lose once. He's a Muscleboy exclusive and one of their most reliable competitors. This time, he's strutting around in shiny zebra trunks, his confidence riding high.

Nick sets up Austin then delivers a big boot to the back.

Between Austin's legs is both the best
and the worst place to have your head.

Nick is one heck of a powerhouse.

It's tough to live up to a match like their first one, so it's good that the setting has changed. It helps avoid too many comparisons. With that said, I'll make a comparison. I have to give the nod to the mat room, because these two really like to pound on one another and the close quarters in the mat room really amplifies that kind of brutality. Here, because the camera is distant, I felt more detached from that part of the match. Where the ring match works better than the mat one is that the ring makes the power moves feel bigger.

Austin finds the perfect counter for Nick's power.

SPLAT!

BOOM!

Action-wise, the best parts are the most brutal parts. This is a hard-hitting slugfest. There are a lot of classic elements, like the collar-and-elbow lockups and Nick's tight headlock. There are awesome power moves, with multiple different slams and suplexes. Not many submission holds - that's not really what this match is about. It's about the guys dishing out the pain with a lot of fists, elbows and other body abuse. Things do get sloppy at times with a few missed moves, although the guys wisely don't sell every miss, making those feel intentional.

It's all back-and-forth from the start with the guys each trying to wear the other down. Everything is sold well by both guys, especially Austin. It's really fast-paced, which you can guess because this is all GIF's. There was really nothing to JPG that was as hot as when the guys are moving. Even a hot submission hold like Austin's hanging scissors requires a GIF.

CRASH!

WHAM!

KABOOM!

In the end, this is a good match for both guys. If you like hard-hitting, rough and tumble matches, you'll probably like this. The guys unleash their inner beasts and go wild on each other. Austin and Nick look incredible, as always. And there are a ton of great moments and hot moves. I preferred the mat match but this works well on its own.

What are other bloggers saying?

So that's my take. What's yours?

  1. Great write-up and animations -- thanks for posting this. I'm a big Austin fan going back to his early UCW days but for some reason, I was going to skip this match -- maybe to save a few bucks. But now you've sold me on it and I want to see all those Suplexes, by the crotch Body Slams, and that Hanging Scissors in the ropes. I actually prefer matches in the ring rather than the matroom as well. Even though Austin matches keep appearing, there's got to be some limit to them, so I better grab them while I can. Thanks!

    1. Thanks!

Yeah, I don’t like to think about it but you’re right that there won’t be Austin matches much longer. Maybe I’ll need to start watching Impact.
