Guest Blogger 2: Cameron Matthews (Wrestler4Hire/Hero Hunks)

Guys,

I've got more from Cameron Matthews from Wrestler4Hire and Hero Hunks.

As I said, he wrote a lot, so I've divvied it up into multiple posts. Today, I've grouped a lot of what he wrote about recruiting and talent. One of the great mysteries for us outsiders, what's it like to have to constantly find, keep and evaluate all these hot studs?

"C'mon, champ ... wrestle for me."
(W4H Cameron Matthews vs. Chase Sinn)

Cameron says …

Recruiting is hit-and-miss. Sometimes the guy shows up, other times he won't. Sometimes he looks like his photos, other times he doesn't. It's always a bit nerve-racking waiting for a new talent to show up.

"So, you going to wrestle for me or not?"
(W4H Cameron Matthews vs. Jason Stone)

I actually get lots of emails from people suggesting pro wrestlers, models, escorts and their friends. That seems to be the most efficient way, but I will also go on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook asking guys if they are interested. I tend to just search out good looking guys or someone with a fresh look that I haven't utilized in a long time.

I've got a few hook ups for male dancers and bodybuilders. That's where I got guys like Nathan FX, Zach Altovito, Mark Muscle and Joey Nux.

Cameron's hook ups came through with big Zach.
(W4H Zach Altovito vs. Max Quivers)

Mark Muscle got to combine dancing and wrestling.
(W4H Austin Cooper vs. Mark Muscle)

"Here's the deal, Joey ... work for me and you can be
dominated by a 4'9"/90-lbs guy!" "Sign. Me. Up!"
(W4H Joey Nux vs. Ricky Vegas)

After a shoot, I tend to get one or two guys saying they've got a friend or know a guy who'd be great for this. I've had a lot of help from Jaxton Wheeler, Trenton Ducati and Z-Man.

Jax and Z-Man (when he's conscious) are good guys.
(W4H Jaxton Wheeler vs. Z-Man)

Even if they do show up, that’s not always a lock, either. There are two similar stories that led to a couple of the most confusing experiences that I've ever had.

I have a buddy who works at a local radio station. He's hosting this event for something and this Hispanic guy walks up to him to tell my friend that he's a fan of him. They chat a bit and the dude gives my buddy his Instagram to check out. Immediately my friend texts me and tells me I NEED TO GET THIS GUY! I look at the dude's Instagram and he's a stud. I shoot him a message from the Hero Hunks Instagram account. He says he's interested and I give him a date that I am filming.

We confirm everything and the day of, he shows up to the shoot location. We shake hands and chat a bit. We get ready to do a match with two other guys and he watches. After the match, or perhaps even during, he asks if he can pee outside. I tell him the bathroom is inside and he is welcome to use it. He says he'd prefer going outside. That's fine.

Some time goes by and one of my buddies asks, "Hey, whatever happened to that Hispanic guy that was here. We definitely need to film with him. He's hot."

I recall he had to tinkle, so I go outside to see if he's hanging outside. Nowhere to be seen. I shoot him a text asking if he's all right and he responds, "I'm not feeling well, can we reschedule?" I try calling and he doesn't answer. We agree to reschedule after a few texts. I shoot him a message a few days prior to confirm he's set for the rescheduled date and he says yes. Day of that shoot he doesn't show up. Still hasn't answered my text messages.

I found it odd, since he could've just said he wasn't interested. It's not a big deal and I can understand almost any concern that someone would have doing wrestling videos, especially these kind.

A similar thing happened to me at a shoot in Orlando. Dude showed up, shook hands, chatted a bit, he asked if he could go out to his car, I said, "Of course" then he never came back.

I just can't see why anyone would get scared off.
I mean, who wouldn't want Guido's shoe on their face?
(W4H Guido Genatto vs. Zach Altovito)

Joey learns that being a wrestler is not for the weak.
(CameronWrestler Ethan Andrews vs. Joey Nux)

If they do stick around and wrestle, I think #1 way I evaluate success comes down to this: do I like having you around at shoots? I'm willing to teach the guy with a good attitude. If there is something that I think I've got a solid grasp on it would be pro wrestling. If you're fun to be around, if you show up mostly on time, if you are always ready for action then I'm gonna be keen on bringing you back.

Most of the new guys don't "get it" until the 3rd match (even the pro wrestlers), so sometimes I stick to the wrestlers that I've used often but understand what I'm looking for.

Let us know when he gets it, okay, Jax?
(W4H Jacob Van Acker vs. Jaxton Wheeler)

Training takes patience and compassion.
Or maybe whatever Eliot is doing.
(W4H Elite Eliot vs. Blake Starr)

Become one with the mat, Blake!
(W4H Elite Eliot vs. Blake Starr)

I really don't know how else I'd justify success other than if I like being around them. Most of the videos I have a hand in creating make their money back. So financially it isn't unsuccessful, you know? This type of business isn't as profitable as you'd think, but as a kid I wanted my own wrestling company and now I've got one.

  1. These insights of Cam's are very interesting. I can see why some guys would rather run away than say "No" to him, though -- he's such a friendly and engaging guy that they probably feel guilty for letting him down and can't bare to face him.

And that last line: "...but as a kid I wanted my own wrestling company and now I've got one." That's so Cam! :)

    1. Thanks for the comment! Yeah, it’s great when dreams come true. Pro wrestler MJF was on the Rosie O’Donnell show as a kid and said he wanted to be a pro wrestler (or an opera singer). It’s interesting that these guys follow through.

  2. I really enjoyed this as Cam is one of my favorites. He's genuine. Such interesting insights on dealing with wrestlers. You'd think that they would know what they were getting into and that the are getting compensated adequately. Maybe they get cold feet because they are straight? Maybe they feel they don't have the skill? It doesn't excuse poor behavior, that's for sure. No one should do what some of these guys have done. But, Cam deals with it and makes it work.
